A large sharp granite boulder, taken from the River Tees near Winston, was installed in the park as a memorial to Dr. R.T. Manson, a well-known scientific and literary authority with a special interest in geology lv. The stone is believed to have originated from Westmorland and
to have been swept down Teesdale by a glacier during the Ice Agelvi. It weighs four tons. Part of the chain that was used to lift the stone during its transportation is preserved in Darlington Museum.
