A new Park Superintendent, James Morrisonxli, was appointed. He was to remain in this post
for 44 years, residing at Park House. During his tenure, he planted many trees and introduced
a great variety of new plants into the park. He was probably most famous for his annual floral
displays on the terraces alongside the river. Each year, he created a different display, usually
illustrating a topical theme. The practice still continues today. Some of his displays consisted
of portraits of famous people, notably Queen Victoria in 1897 (jubilee year) for which he
received a letter of acknowledgement from the Queenxlii.
